CRB and Registration

The DSA requires all new trainees to complete a FREE enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check to verify your suitability as a fit and proper person. The basic criteria you must be aware of is: 1) Yo u must not have more than 6 points on your Driving Licence and 2) Whilst some Criminal Convictions are permissable, you should apply to the Registrar first for permission to join the Register. We will be happy to help you to prepare any correspondence which might explain any mitigating circumstances.

IT MAY TAKE 8 WEEKS TO RECEIVE YOUR CRB CHECK.

WE TRAIN YOU WEEKLY WHILST WAITING AS THIS ALLOWS US TO DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS MORE FULLY !!

Assuming the CRB check is completed first you will then need to Register as a potential driving instructor. This can be completed on-line at www.direct.gov.uk or we will provide the form which you can then popin the post . You will then recieve a confirmation letter from the Registrar, normally within 3 weeks to confirm your acceptance onto the Register of Potential Driving Instructors (PDI).

Part 1

This is a home study exercise using the DSA question bank, a DVD and other reference materials provided by us.

You will need to pass the ADI Theory Test which will consists of one hundred multiple choice questions. You are asked 25 questions from each of four categories and you must score a minimum of 20 out of 25 from each category and a minimum of 85 out of 100 to pass. It is possible to fail by getting 19 out of 25 in one category and yet still get more than 85 questions right.

At the same time you will need to pass the ADI Hazard Perception Test. This is a a computer based series of 14 videos in which there are 15 developing azards which you will need to identify by clicking your mouse. To do this test you must understand the difference between potential and developing hazards. There are a number of other factors we need to make you aware of  which we will do as we demonstrate how to prepare for this test on a laptop.

Prepare for both of these tests by attending training sessions for Part’s Two and Three at the same time.

Part 2

This is a practical driving test of roughly one hour in length and you are allowed to commit a maximum of six driver faults. You will be required to carry out four manouevres, the emergency stop and complete a general drive over a course designed to test your ability to read the road, drive safely, smoothly and positively. We prepare you during a series of in-car training sessions over about 30 to 40 hours.

You will be fully coached in every aspect of your driving style and develop your knowledge and understanding. Getting it right at this stage ensures you will be able to teach your pupils well.

Trainee Licence

We only get one chance to train you properly to become an Approved Driving Instructor so we aim to develop your skills fully by the time you qualify. Once you have completed a minimum of 40 hours of Part 3 training and feel competent to teach we want you to apply for a trainee licence.  You can then begin to work with real pupils, start to generate an income and get at least 500 hours of training before attempting the Part 3 test of instructional ability.

Part 3

If you can work for 30 hours a week over six months or more and train with us weekly, you will have had over 600 hours of development. You should now be close to being an instinctively good ADI, that is, you can do your job without thinking too much about it. We expect you to train weekly with us at one or more of our training venues to ensure your continuous development.

KISS has a 95% completion rate because we make every effort to ensure you can do your job well and pass the tests and we won’t encourage trainees to take tests until they are ready.
